Journey To Mecca - About

  • Where is Mecca?

Mecca, known in Arabic as Makkah, is a city of nearly 2 million people, located in the Hijaz region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, just inland from the Arabian Sea, and the port city of Jeddah.

Mecca was located at the crossroads of major caravan routes, and home to abundant water due to a spring known as the Zamzam well. The desert conditions of the Arabian peninsula provided the context for constant conflict between local tribes, but each year these tribes would make peace and journey to Mecca on an annual pilgrimage.

Mecca is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammed, the site where the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammed and is the holiest city in Islam.
